14OCT08 OBLC - Fly or drive?

Published

My CPT informed me that I will be receiving orders for 14OCT-05DEC08 OBLC at Ft. Sam Houston, TX then to my duty station in Ft. Bragg, NC.

Would it be better for me to fly or drive to to OBLC? I currently live in California and would come back here to get my things before going to Ft. Bragg. Then this poses the next question: will I need a vehicle while I am at Ft. Sam?

Thanks in advance!

Sobi,

I had asked my recruiter about that..and he told me that I would be able to travel home via airplane as opposed to driving. Perhaps I will double check with him again. Are you AC or RC as that could be different?

I am active duty. The way it works is they will fly you to San Antonio, then to your duty station. As for me, Im headed to Tripler and I'm from CA, so the travel company will fly me to Los Angeles one day and I'll fly out to Hawaii a few days later with my wife and kids. I got lucky cause my friend (from Philly) flew here and is driving to Colorado (Ft Carson), but he has to fly on his own dime back to Philly and pack his family up and drive from PA to CO. He found out early enough to buy a cheap ticket on Southwest for $89 from San Antonio to Philly. I wish I could drive cause I think they make a little money that way with time (that doesn't come out of your leave while you are driving cause you get 300 miles/day for distance and you can make it quicker and keep the cash), and its gonna cost me some leave while I am in CA with my family since I only get one day to travel to Hawaii (because it is by plane). Hope this helps.

sobi,

i spoke with my recruiter today and was told that i would be able to fly home. he said that all three of us (who he is sending to oblc) will be able to fly home, plus the other rn will be staying there as that will be her station. honestly, it really does not matter if they send me to my pcs as it is only 100 miles away from where i currently live. plus, my family will be staying at my home as i just moved into a new subdivision two years ago and could not sell my home for what it's worth right now with the market. the plan is for me to find a place close/on base and then commute home on my days off. perhaps that is why i will be able to fly home?

[color=#556b2f]i agree, i wish that some of us had information prior to leaving for oblc. i heard about the skunks and scorpions:uhoh21:. i would love to hear more about your experiences, as it seems that many of us have been told conflicting information.
