OCCC Nursing Program

Hi and grats on choosing a great nursing program. Here are my suggestions:

1- Talk to the Health Professions Advisor!!!!!!!! She knows and can tell you EVERYTHING you need to do to get enough points to be able to have the best chance of getting in.

2-Get as many classes done that you can BEFORE you even start. Nursing school is TOUGH and to try and juggle Nursing Process classes with other classes is more than enough for some people.

As far as points go, I believe the max amount of points you can possibly achieve is 24, but 17 points seems to be the "magic" number for guaranteed getting in. You can get in with less, of course, but might become an alternate etc.

Thanks! I didn't get a change to talk to with the advisor this week so I probably wont be able to meet with her until January 2. However, I am currently in enrolled for spring in College Prep Math 1 and 2, History, Medical Terminology, Developmental Psychology, and Overview of Nursing. I already have taken English comp 1 and 2, American Government, Intro to Psych, NUTRITION, and FIRST AID. My GPA is 3.0, so should I apply for the Fall 2013 nursing program or Spring 2014?

I can't tell you which to apply for, but I will say you have a good start. You will still need College Prep Math 3 and 4, Survey of Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Microbiology (You could wait and do it during the summer while in the program, but better to do everything before). If I remember right, you have to complete all the CPM classes before you can take Chemistry. To boost your chances of getting in, you should make sure to get A's in all your classes to bring your GPA up. Your GPA isn't bad, but the better your GPA is, the higher chances you have. Also, For A&P take the professor whose name sounds like money (Cash). For Chemistry take the professor whose name rhymes with Stryker. :)

When you talk to the Health professions advisor, she will tell you how best to do your classes from here on to boost your chances and to do it faster. I think realistically, you are looking at applying in Spring 2014 for a Fall 2014 entry, but you could possibly do it sooner too. Don't let her intimidate you though.

Yes, you do have the choice. Survey of Chem is a LOT easier than General Chem and is a pre req for General Chem anyway. In addition, if you look on Mineonline, General Chem has a whole host of other pre reqs also.. For the sole purpose of the nursing program at OCCC you will not need anything more than Survey of Chem (Principles of Chem)

General Chem at lest according to Mineonline doesn't have any pre-reqs.

I am not saying not to take General Chem, just that it's waaaaay more difficult that Principles is. You want to maximize your chances of getting A's too, especially in the sciences. :)

Only requirement for gen chem is college algebra. You do not have to take principles for gen Chem

No, but you have to take the CPM (college prep maths) to get into college algebra, to get into chem. That's the point. Lol
