OCC - for Fall 2012 or Jan 2012 prospective students!

Published

Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.

I just want to tell everyone not to give up.

I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.

I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.

I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.

Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!

mskarb, what a small world..LOL, I am super excited! My poor husband all he hears me talking about is the NP...haha!! Unfourntly I'm in the Wed class, but hopefully we'll have some other class together :) I know we'll all see each other at the orientation :)

Hi all, Just a quick question: does anyone know if we have a dress code other than for our clinicals?? I seems like some of the other schools have to dress up and wear lab coats duing lab days?? Thanks!!

Hi princessim2003!

On campus, for both theory and lab, you wear your normal street clothing. The nursing scrubs/uniform is for clinicals only, with the exception of the psych rotation. During psych, you wear business casual clothing (skirts below the knee, no cleavage, stockings with skirts, flat shoes, etc.). There's a section in the nursing student handbook, which I believe you'll get at orientation, with more details.

Good luck!

Thanks wendyyvonne :)

You're welcome!

Has anyone bought the Dosage Calculations book? I didn't because it said it wasn't required and Whosurdaddy said he never used it. But on the memo we got in our initial packets it says to bring it to the first class. I really don't want to spend the money if I don't have to, but Im worried I'll miss out on something by not having it or look "bad" to the teacher by not having it. (I'm scared of NS instuctors already!) :uhoh3:

I bought it on half.com. I'm a werdio thou, I buy everything they tell me to and then get mad at myself because I never use it.

guys, although it has been 2 years i did not use that drug calc book at all. that book is only used for showing you how to do drug clacs, obviously. i would show up to class and if they tell you, you need it you can run to the book store on break and buy it really quick. otherwise your wasting your money.

ps

dont worry about your theory instructors, they are all pretty nice except one and really cant effect your grade unless they are willing to mess with your scan tron. you need to worry about your clinical instructor though, if you **** them off they will fail you for just about anything.

Hi whosurdaddy,

Can you tell me what is ATI study guide stand for and how good isit for pharm.... I have seen some thread on this website.Thanks.

I did.I dont think I am going to use it, though I bought a used one. Whosurdaddy is right. There is so much study material for dosage calculation available online for free.. and we have enough practice worksheets... you can also get some dosage calculations practice...from OCC Southfield ASC homepage... just belwo MPT worksheet. Hope it helps..... just see if you can do these worksheets... then decide to buy.... also in our syllabus we have appendix d to practice.

havent heard anything about ATI study guides

here is my advice. this summer all you will be doing is pharm, no clinical, no lab. for the entire week all you will have to study is pharm. you guys are all very smart. your gpa's are very high. relax pharm is not incredibly hard. as long as you work each week and study you should all pass. just dont take it for granted. nursing school is going to put you under incredible stress but not until fall. find some friends and form a study group.

so for now i would forget the study guides, unless you've got money to blow.

Whosurdaddy,

This is off the subject but do the teachers give many powerpoints? What is their teaching/testing style as far as book, powerpoints, etc? Are they all different? Im just trying to get an idea.

Also, I know a Schoolcraft NS who says they don''t have any homework. (???!?!) What I'm assuming she meant was that they do have projects, papers, etc, but they aren't officially graded on them; their grades come down to test points. I havent had a chance to ask her to clarify. I realize that is a different school, but how is OCC as far as that stuff goes?

Thanks for all your insight, as always!
