Obtaining PHN certification with BSN from UTA

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

I am currently an RN working as a Foster Care Nurse, which requires that I have my BSN and PHN certification. I had been under the impression that completion of my BSN would qualify me to apply for the PHN component with California's BRN, but this isn't always the case I've come to find out. I like everything I have read about UTA's online RN-BSN program and have already applied for the Spring 2014, but completion of this BSN program does not come with the public health nurse element.

I did just find information through CSU Dominguez Hills that I can complete courses after I receive my BSN to complete the PHN certification process before applying to the CA BRN. Has anyone done this or gone through another school to do so?

Any information is much appreciated.

The Vulnerable Populations class is public health nursing. Are they wanting more than that?

I had emailed UTA asking if their RN to BSN had a public health component and they replied that it did not. That being said, the instructions on the CSUDH website say to apply to the CA board of registered nursing and submit my transcripts and they will decide whether I meet the public health certificate requirements or not. If I don't, then I can take the needed extra classes at CSUDH and reapply for the certification. I was just hoping to hear feedback from someone who has graduated from UTA with a BSN and then got their PHN in CA.

I would be happy to forward you the syllabus if it would help.

Sorry I am just now replying, thank you for the offer :)

What did you find out? I, too, want to get my PHN cert in CA. If you live in CA, and complete the practicum in CA, apparently you will qualify to get PHN cert. Do you live in CA? I am in AZ and want that CA PHN cert.

I live in CA. I'm going to get my BSN with UTA and apply for the PHN and if the CA BRN denies it, then I will have to take a semester at a University in CA to obtain the PHN most likely.

Hi Mesa14,

I'm also looking into UTA for the BSN program. What did you find out about the CA PHN requirement? How's the course going?

This is probably a long shot, but were you able to find out whether the CA BON will accept our UTA BSN courses to apply for the PH certification?

I haven't been able to reach the CA BON By phone or e-mail. They are always experiencing a large volume of calls....

Thank you so much for your time.

Hi,

I was just curious what did the CA BRN decide after you applied?? I just applied last month after completing my BSN in June. I'm kind of nervous and it'll take 12-14 weeks to process.

Thank you,

Chris

I graduated from UTA in December 2015 and took child abuse course from Quantum. Applied for PHN and after 11 months of many emails and phone calls, I finally got rejection in the mail saying that I do not meet all the requirements for PHN. They require to have 90 clinical hours under supervision of PHN.
