Obtaining a BSN while active duty army and Questions about AECP

Published

Hi Everyone I'm currently in DEP for 68D. I want to become a RN and officer more then anything and I'm desperately seeking answers on how To go about it while active duty. My questions Are........................................................................................................................ 1) if I do not meet the 110 GT requirement for AECP And officer (I have a 108 GT score) can I retake the ASVAB or GT section alone once im active duty............................................ 2) I know one of the other requirements is to be able to complete a BSN in 24 months or less so does that mean I must have a ASN or can I just have all 60 General Education courses required for a BSN. If I need a ASN, is it possible to obtain while active duty? how? I have 9 college credits................................................................................................. 3) do you need a security clearance for AECP? I have a clean back ground but my credit is iffy due to my mother taking out credit in my name WITHOUT my knowledge and not making the payments. By the time I found out they were 6 months delinquent and I made settlements on them.................................................................................................. 4) my last question is regarding my MOS decision. When I went to MEPS my MOS was 68W airborne. At the last minute I changed to 68D because the lady at MEPS told me I would have more time and opportunities to go to school and obtain my RN. She also told my is I was stationed at a hospital (which according to her 68D would be) the staff there would tell me the ins and outs of obtaining my RN while active duty. so I through away 68W the MOS I truly wanted and waited for so I would have more time and oppertunitys to go to school and obtain my RN. DID SHE TELL ME THE TRUTH? DID I MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION FOR WHAT I WANT TO ACCOMPLISH? My contract is for 6yrs and I want to have attest my RN before then. Because If I find out I won't be able to at least obtain my RN wile active duty I will change my MOS back to 68W. Ill enjoy it a lot more and will have the opportunity to be a flight medic at some point in time. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Hello Future,

I can only answer some of your questions...hopefully someone else will pick up where I leave off....

1. You can raise your GT score once you are in the Army by going to BSEP or FAST class. The education center on post will have the information on when they are holding the class.

2. You do not need an ASN for the AECP. You just need to meet the pre-reqs of whatever college you are trying to get into. Start researching now....so that you know what classes you need to take so that you are on track to enter nursing school as a transfer student. You want to have as many A's as you can get...

3. Yes you need a security clearance. At least a Secret.

4. I can't answer this question as I am an MP. I am applying this year (Board convenes in August).

Good luck!

Mrskwk, thank you for the info. Would 66 college credits (the pre-reqs i would need for a BSN) actually be obtainable in about 4yrs while active duty?

You can get a good amount of college online depending on your attitude. If you come in and fart around with these guys straight of high school and get caught up in that drama and drink party all the time then probably not.

Come in with your goals in mind. Write them down. Write down your plan and look at it often.

You are able to get Tuition Assistance and it will cover alot of your costs where it is almost free. The thing thing is you need to sign up for it early on probably at your first duty station to max out rewards. The reason is because your payback runs concurrent with your obligation so you pay back the time at the same time as your service obligation. people wait to the last minute and it doesnt work.

Don't sign up for 6 years, that is a very long time.

Your initial MOS pick I can't help you out. Never been enlisted, but what I can see for your end goal it shouldn't matter. Although I think the Delta is a OR tech? You may or may not be in a hospital you may get in a CSH and you will be in a warehouse in garrison .. hey it happens.

The 68W Airborne sounds fun man. Easier to get your wings and do all that high speed stuff while your young with good knees. So when you do switch over you got some bling =)

Why not go to a 4 year school and take an ROTC scholarship?

Main thing is if you do go enlisted don't let your dreams fall to the side and get caught up in the b.s. stay focused and don't tell yourself that you can't do it.
