OB/NBN Interview Tomorrow - New Grad

Published

Hey, I have a new grad interview in the morning in the local hospital's OB/NBN unit! I am VERY excited, but have been told up front that there are two experienced nurses that also applied and basically will get the position over me if they want it.

Is there anything that I should ask about or things that may make me seem like a good candidate even though I'm unexperienced? ANY help will be greatly appreciated! Plus I don't graduate for another two months.. so even if she does hire someone else, I need to make a great impression so when I do graduate, she may think of me if they have another position opening!

THANKS

Here are some examples of interview questions. They usually ask less than 10 questions.

How long have you been looking for a job?

(Concern: Is there something wrong with you that other employers have picked up?)

How did you prepare for this interview?

(Concern: Are you interested enough to do research, or are you going to “wing it”?)

What is your salary expectation for this job?

(Concern: Can we afford you? Can we get you for less than budgeted?)

How do you keep current and informed about your job and the industries that you have worked in?

(Concern: Once you get the job do you intend to learn and grow – stay challenged and motivated?)

What kinds of people do you have difficulties working with?

(Concern: Are you flexible about diversity and can you be a good team member?)

We expect managers to work more than eight hours a day. Do you have a problem with that?

(Concern: Are you a work-alcoholic or a person who requires balance? Are you adaptable?)

How do you adapt to new situations?

(Concern: Are you flexible — adaptable?)

Why do you want this job?

(Concern: are you using the shot-gun approach to job search or do you really know what you want?)

We are ready to make an offer. Are you ready to accept today?

(Concern: we don’t want you to go away and think about it and change your mind — we want you.)

What Are Your Goals? (short term/long term goals)

What Are Three Positive Things Your Last Boss Would Say About You?

It's time to pull out your old performance appraisals and boss's quotes. This is a great way to brag about yourself through someone else's words: "My boss has told me that I am the best designer he has ever had. He knows he can rely on me, and he likes my sense of humor."

What Salary Are You Seeking?

What range do you typically pay to new graduates?"

If You Were an Animal, Which One Would You Want to Be?

Interviewers use this type of psychological question to see if you can think quickly. If you answer "a bunny," you will make a soft, passive impression. If you answer "a lion," you will be seen as aggressive. What type of personality would it take to get the job done? What impression do you want to make?

What qualities do you admire most in people?

Describe a difficult decision you've made and the process you went through to reach that decision.

What nursing organizations do you belong to?

What journals do you read?

Describe a challenging problem you faced on one of your clinical rotations. How did you solve the problem?

Give a specific example of a time when you knew you did a good job as a nurse.

Have you ever been burned out? When? What did you do about it?

What do you do to relax when faced with stressful work situations?

How would you respond if a doctor in a rude and haughty tone questioned your work, which you knew to be top-notch and absolutely accurate?

We all have tried different ways of showing consideration for others. What are some things you've actually done?

What are some of the ways that Nursing can become more professional?

If you were told that the nursing field was closed and you could not be a nurse, what would you do? I

Describe a situation you experienced in the past year, connected with nursing that made you angry.

Hey, thank you for those questions! I'll def prepare and think those through prior to going in the morning! Those actually aren't too bad!!

I'm really wanting this job! The thing is, with no previous experience.. and not even graduated yet.. do you have any tips on how to appeal as a new graduate?? Things that are beneficial in having a new grad?

Go to your interview with a positive attitude. Give a firm hand shake. Look at the interviewer in the eyes and take your time answering the questions. Do your best, you have nothing to lose. Ask them at least 3 questions example: what is the nurse/patient ratio? What do you like the most about working for this facility? How much do you usually pay to new graduates?

Good luck and don't worry too much. No matter what happens, you will learn from this interview process.

Thanks! I do understand that.. and it's almost a good thing she has other experienced people. I feel more relaxed but at the same time, I know I can make a good enough impression and hopefully we click and I can maybe get something in the very near future! I'm very excited to learn from the interview and maybe my willingness to simply learn from the interview might make her interested in me! I really hope something works out though! It would be amazing to start out in the area I truly think I'm meant for! =)
