OB... L&D.... what's the difference???

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I just applied for a PRN position for OB, exp preferred but not required. I scroll through the list of jobs, and there is another job stating it's for Labor and Delivery, L&D exp required!

I'm not sure what the difference is. I figured OB would be L&D... maybe it's including everything (postpartum, antepartum, etc??) It didn't say in the job description. I was just curious and wondered if anyone else might know :)

Specializes in Labor and Delivery, Newborn, Antepartum.

I'm an RN on an OB unit. We do L&D, postpartum, normal nursery and special care nursery. We also do antepartum observation and care for patients with antepartum complications to some extent. We can, if M/S is full, take post surgical hyst patients, but that doesn't happen very often.

There are a lot of hospitals that I know of that have everything seperated. For example, L&D unit, Postpartum unit, Nursery, NICU.

Where I live, we have a hospital that places job postings on the company website and it lists L&D as just that, and Obstetrics refers to their Postpartum unit. I don't know why they don't just call it PP. Confusing.
