Portable Hot Tubs for Labor

Published

Hi Everyone,

We recently received two portable hot tubs for labor patients to use for relaxation and pain relief. I noticed that it is quite a process to set them up and to take them down. Do any of you have these? Please share your opinions related to good and bad points to consider. I would also like to know what your patients think of them.

Thanks so much,

let the nurses get in to test the water!!!

some patients love them; some hate them. our hospital owns NONE but patients are welcome to bring in those they rent. they are a b---- to set up. but they are worth it for those wanting a water labor/birth.

We have one here at our hospital.....it is way to involved to set up, the cables connecting the water is a trip hazard, the pump is hard to use....most of the time we are way to busy to let someone use it....it is a HUGE pain in the rear!!!!

I noticed that the set up is quite involved and time consuming. I did get the chance to try it...ahhhh...it was VERY nice. I am thinking that we will only use it if we are not too busy and if there is someone really in need of a pain relief alternative to IV meds. We don't have epidurals or intrathecals...so the tubs offer us something more for the patients. If anyone has a policy to share with me, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks :-)

Try the perinatal listserve for ideas/policies regarding the use of hottubs. They have discussed these many times before. If not, you can pose the request out there for a copy of a P/P to use as an example for your unit.

The above link should get you there. I can't say how MUCH valuable info I have found there. It's great!
