One thing to keep in mind is that you aren't guaranteed to work anywhere. You may really love OB but have no opportunity to work there. Would you be able to work med/surg and not hate it? I was hired into OB right out of school, but that isn't very common. Just a thought. Good luck with whatever you do.
I got right into OB and LOVE it!!! There are some draw backs. First of all, it can be very stressful and demanding. I actually hurt my shoulder last week holding a ladies leg while she was pushing. I have found that some of the Doctors are very rude to a new graduate. Fetal Demises are very tough. Also, when there is not enough patients I have to stay home on call for $2/hour
There are many positives as well! Getting to witness such a miracle is amazing. Bonding with your patient and her family is a great experience. Challenging yourself intellectually is a bonus. I did not like Med/Surge in school and can never see myself as that kind of nurse. Do not feel guilty if you can not see yourself doing that, there are many other areas of nursing. Good luck :)
Hey! Ive been an OB RN at a SFL hospital. I got hired straight out of nursing school and I love it! Like KatieL&D said the demises are tough to get accustomed to...but its still rewarding to comfort the pt and family. another drawback is that you know so much and see so much that you start thinking about you and your on pregnancy. so many complications can arise....
overall, its a beautiful thing. every delivery is a MIRACLE. every baby is truly a blessing. its one of the "healthier" areas of nursing. you get to teach a lot! thats cool. n my favorite part- there is ALWAYS room for excitement. babies don't know what time a day it is... deliveries can happen at any time! and at times you get your stat admissions =) and EVERY pt is a different story! but you gotta love it good luck. let me know if u have any questions!!!

Hi everyone, I am a freshman pre-nursing student and I am currently trying to decide if I want to stay with nursing or not. I love babies and I am interested in OB-GYN nursing and I just wanted to get everyone that actually works in this field's advice, reasons why they chose this field, best/worst part of your job, typical day etc. Also I live in Florida so it would help a little if you were actually a nurse working in a hospital/private practice in Florida.
Thanks!
