Oakton Community College Fall 2011 program

U.S.A. Illinois

Spoke to an advisor who said that they usually don't go below the 89 percentile even with people getting high scores. Anyone above 90 should be fine and she said acceptance letters should go out by the end of March. I am waiting patiently and hope I am one of the 60 people who made it in.

So far, 104 has been pretty easy ::fingers crossed:: and I hope it stays that way!!!!

If I get to pick first, do you recommend any of the teachers or do you pick by clinical site?

People basically pick by clinical site...Your clinical and lab grades are just p/f so I wouldn't worry too much about who the teacher is. People rarely fail clinical unless they act completely inappropriately. Your grade for the class comes entirely from your lecture grade and I had Mrs. Ferguson for 104, but for you guys the other choice is Mr. Lee and he is great too. For 103, all of you will have Mrs. Gas and she is very very sweet.

Thanks for all the information, I will find out on Monday.

Hi everyone! I just received acceptance for fall 2011, and just like many others i'm excited / nervous to begin the program.

Should we make an official oakton student thread [unless one already exists and i just cant find it] so that we can share tips tricks and get advice from people like drgngnr2002 who are already in the program. (without any NLN questions lol)

Hi, I also got accepted to the fall program at Oakton. I'm in the gateway program and it's different. I was wondering did anyone on here get into this too?

We have our own discussion forum in WebCt, you'll see all the tips, complaints, advises, etc that pertain to the nursing program in Oakton. Welcome to the club!

Do you know what skills are testing during orientation? I got to pick my classes early but screwed up because I didn't understand if i picked the hospital I wanted I would automatically get a teacher and that happened to be Margaret Gas. I can't believe I could have picked anyone, now I am worried

Mrs. Gas is awesome and really really nice, especially in 103. I think you'll like her alot. She tries to be a bear at first to make everyone understand how serious the program is, but she is a huge softie at heart.

Do you mean your CNA skills? It is basically just bedmaking, bedbaths, handwashing, vital signs....Except for vital signs, you just do everything as a group and they sign off on it. You really don't need to practice or worry about it.

I think people either really like her or not. She didn't seem very nice today in orientation but maybe as you said she wants to be strict at first. She was the one who said we get tested and it if we didn't pass a skill we had to do remediation. All of us who did BNAT a while ago were nervous. Even working as a PCT you don't do things the way they taught.

Well some people don't pass vital signs and they do have to remediate, but it is no big deal. You just come in for an extra hour and go over the skills again that you failed, and then at the end you re-do them and pass! It could be much worse :)

She seemed very strict at our orientation too, but as long as you follow the rules and guidelines set out she will not try to make your life difficult.

Are you guys excited about your clinical placements?
