NYS DOH summer camp regulations

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm a nursing student and I did some looking for an assistant job at a summer camp for this upcoming summer, and one of the things I did was put a profile on Camp Staff Nurses then sent my profile to a couple camps. I have been contacted (and hired) by one of the camps as a nursing assistant, but just today, I got an email from another camp that read:

Hope you are doing good. I just saw your listing on Camp Staff and was wondering if you would be interested in talking about a position at Camp _____.

We have a modern infirmary with a MD there 24/7 and at least two to three medical staff which will be either RN's or EMT's. We have clinic call 3 times a day when campers and staff come with their problems. Unfortunately under New York Department of Health rules you can not treat our campers. So the position we have would be as the infirmary assistant. You would be responsible for greeting the campers and staff and finding out what the problem is and recording this, and then passing them onto the other medical staff to treat. Also you would be responsible for recording all medical treatment and preparing medical paperwork when needed. We do have 'in mates' who have to stay in the infirmary which can be a tough time for our campers (and staff!) so part of your role would be to help them through this time. You would be surrounded by medical professionals in a pediatric environment so it should provide a useful learning situation for your studies, as well as a fun and rewarding time for you.

I don't see how that can possibly be true considering the camp that hired me is ACA accredited...wouldn't they absolutely have to adhere to the DOH regulations to be accredited?

Anyone know?
