Any NYC nurses that work as per diem? I'm curious as to how per diem works. Is there a mandatory amount of days you have to schedule? Do they give you from set days to choose from? Is there a minimum amount of shifts/hours you have to work in a month?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Those answers vary from facility to facility, although I'm not sure the state you're in is too important. My per diem job requires availability for at least six days in a two month period. The fact that I'm available doesn't mean they'll schedule me, though. I'm also the first to get canceled (along with other per diems) if the census is low ...and the first to float, if need be. There are no benefits like health insurance or paid time off, but my hourly rate is higher than it would be if I were full time.
I have complete control over which days I'm willing to work- most of the time. I did agree to work one major holiday and one minor one at the time of hire. I either write my "available" days on the upcoming schedule or someone calls/emails me at home when the schedule is being made.
