Hi all :typing
I have been a RN for a year now am trying to transfer to a NYC hospital. I have applied everywhere (Mt.Sinai, NYU, St. Vincents, Bellevue, Lenox Hill... you name it) and have only heard back from NY Presbyterian. I am interested in going into maternity and applied for a few open positions there. A recruiter finally called me back and said she would send my resume to the recruiter of that unit but because my experience is in tele i may not be considered. I have already called back twice now but she said the other recruiter is on vaca...I have heard the hiring process at NY Presbyterian takes forever and the fastest way to go about is to try to get someone on a floor to pass your resume on to a manager. I am desperately trying to move and have been applying since january-- is there anyone out there that either works for NY Pres or any other NYC hospital that is willing to give me some advice or maybe direct me to a good contact person? I would appreciate it soo much!! I have been trying so hard and want this more than anything! Thanks everyone!

Hi littlienewbe:
I was on Monsterboard.com and there are plenty of listings in Mount Sinai Hospital for nurses. The best advice I can give you is to go directly to the hospitals face to face.

I don't know about Columbia Presb, but I have gone to Mount Sinai in person, and they referred me to go to their designated Nurse Recruitment office, which is on a different street from the hospital. When I got there, a clerk asked If I had applied online since it's 'the easiest way' and I told her that I had done so, numerous time, but never heard back.
She said it may be no different here, because she will just place the resume/cover letter in a big 'in-box', for the recruiters to pick up. They did not offer a recruiter to interview me at the time, since they said they don't do that on the spot, and only by appointment.
I don't know about walking on the floor and trying to talk to a nurse manager, but it's not that easy to get inside that hospital, w/o a pass and telling them exactly where you are going. They often ask if you have an appointment to see someone, if you are not visiting patients. I guess you can say you have an appt. but running after a busy nurse manager, they may not always appreciate that, and I've heard some say, to go to the nurse recruitment office.
Maybe some people actually have luck if they run into an amicable nurse manager who doesn't mind being interrupted from her busy day.

I work at NYP and I can tell you from personal experience - HR and nurse recruitment there is terrible. They never ever respond to phone calls or emails. I do recall seeing some L&D positions posted and I think the best way to get in the door there is to contact the hiring manager DIRECTLY and then backtrack to go through HR. It's the only way to light a fire under them in that department. They all seem to ALWAYS be on "vacation". Good luck!!
