:yawn:Just read again, that there will be a shortage in 2016, an article coming out of california, with colleges having 2 yr. waiting list. They are sending infor also to high schools, requiring them to teach A & P and microbiology, so that the students can save money and time. Is this some kind of a joke. WHERE IS THE SHORTAGE, the field is now becming more competitive, because of the influx of RN, attrition, laying off and rehiring at a lower rate of pay. Hospitals are closing, and rhectoric still going on about a SHORTAGE, this is madness in NURSING, anybody else.:uhoh3::jester:

While there is no shortage today ... there may well be one in 2016 when today's older nurses retire and/or decrease their hours. The economy has made life today very frustrating and the nursing job market tight, but that doesn't eliminate the probability that there will be a shortage in the future. Equating today's market conditions with those of 6 years from now in not a valid comparison. It's like comparing "apples to oranges" as they say.

It's perfectly OK to vent your frustrations here. But we can't let our frustration over the current situation prevent us from making plans for the needs of the future.

well if the Health Plan passes there will be many more patients. However, there will be less money to go around and nurses may have to settle for less pay. I say plan ahead. You can always change your mind later.

The reason the "shortage" thing is being touted is meerly to keep salaries low, glutting the market does this. Moreover, keeping the salary low gets rid of the people that can do something else and might complain too much about importing foreign nurses which will be picked up again when , not if , some kind of health care reform passes. And something will pass as it has too, our overhead for healthcare is simply too high, the highest in the world. I am from a family that has an insurancee franchise and believe me if it doesnt get slowed down now you aint seen nothing yet, there is no slowin down that ball rolin down the hill. Now that they have ALL the power they are running with it
