gastroenteritis

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hello friends,

I am first year nursing student. I have some questions related to gastroenteritis viral. I have to write an essay about anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and microbiology of this disease. I have done research but still, it is not clear for me. is there anyone to explain for me the concept of anatomy and physiology? I know anatomy related to the body and gastroenteritis is an inflammation of stomach and intestine. is it correct that pain, fever,... and vomiting, can be the physiology? Also, is pathophysiology relate to symptoms and signs of disease or am wrong?

Any respond is valuable for me thanks

Specializes in Med-Tele; ED; ICU.

Considering gastritis as opposed to gastroenteritis...

Anatomy describes the structure of the stomach and its glands and cells.

Normal gastric physiology is how the stomach normally works... various cell types (e.g. chief, parietal, etc) secrete various substances (e.g. HCl, pepsin, mucus, bicarb, etc) to begin the breakdown of ingested food and protect the stomach itself.

Pathophysiology describes the ways in which that process malfunctions... excessive acid, lack enzymes or enzyme activity, loss of mucus, insufficient bicarb, etc.

Viral structure and physiology... of course, it depends on the specific virus family, but the most salient point is that it's viral rather than bacterial which means antibiotics won't do squat and the patient requires supportive care of associated symptoms.

Signs and symptoms... Signs of gastritis are those things which can be objectively seen and described (e.g. the patient is vomiting bilious emesis and has a fever of 38.2) while symptoms are those sensations experienced by the patient (e.g. nausea and abdominal pain).

Incorrect... inflammation is pathophysiology... that is, disturbed homeostasis and the body's response to restore it. Anatomy would be the structure of the stomach and intestine.

is it correct that pain, fever,... and vomiting, can be the physiology?
No... pain, fever, and vomiting are signs and symptoms resulting from the underlying pathophysiology.

Also, is pathophysiology relate to symptoms and signs of disease or am wrong?
No, you are not wrong. Please see the immediately preceding statement.

You are quite welcome.

Thanks a lot, now its more clear for me. you are so kind :)
