How do I write off Uniforms on my Taxes?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

I am planning on submitting receipts for a tax write-off on uniforms for the 1st time. Does anyone know if I do this on State tax, Local tax, or both? Thanks!

I don't know about your state, but you can deduct them on your federal tax return if you itemize your deductions (otherwise, you can't). They would be listed under "unreimbursed employee expenses" (or whatever that category is called -- I'm not sure I'm recalling correctly offhand, but you'll recognize the right category when you look at the instructions for completing Schedule A). And you don't submit receipts -- you just list the total amount on your Schedule A, and keep the receipts with the rest of your tax documentation, in case you're audited.

Check the instructions for Schedule A -- everything you need to know is there.

I don't think it's going to make a difference on my federal taxes. I wanted to know if I can claim uniforms on state, local or both tax forms.

Thanks anyway!

I'm guessing that would vary from state to state. In my state, the state income tax form has you fill in the adjusted income from your federal return (after you've taken whatever federal deductions (standard or itemized) you can), and there are only a few specific, additional deductions you can take on the state form (none of which would involve work expenses). However, I'm sure there is a lot of variety among the states.

If you mention what state you're in, or post this question in that state's forum here, you might get a better answer. :)
