Hello, everyone!
I am so grateful you are here. I’m in pre- nursing status currently. I live in Los Angeles and my first choice for nursing school is Santa Monica College, as that is where I live and have completed all of my classes thus far. Being in LA county, everything is closed for the foreseeable future. SMC only takes forty applicants a year and is quite competitive. I have a great GPA, but have been unable to complete any volunteer hours for extra points due to the pandemic. I have considered getting my CNA license for some extra points, but everything is closed.
I am trying my best to be proactive in my nursing school search, but it seems many nursing schools in LA county are not taking applicants for fall 2021. Does anyone happen to know of a public school taking applications for Fall 2021 that won’t penalize me for not having volunteer hours or a CNA license?
Many, many thanks in advance for any insight on this matter.
Best,
Rachael Boughton

Hi!
I have heard that Kaiser is accepting volunteers again but the process takes about a month to get started. You can also look into the COPE Health Scholar program, it costs money though! Maybe also try making a list of hopsital/clinics near you, and call to see if they have volunteer opportunities with direct patient care (worth a shot even with the pandemic).
The American Red Cross is still doing CNA courses, there are also some other places, like adult schools, who are doing them as well. But I only know for my area, not the Santa Monica area. ARC is really great about sending new grad emplyment opportunites when you finish the program, as long as you are fine with working in nursing homes or a SNF.
So far, I have only heard that the LA County gov ADN program has suspended Fall 2021, because they are moving their Spring cohort to Fall. What others have you heard of?
