nursing school application question

Published

For the essay portion of my application to nursing school, it asks to write about accomplishments that have given me the most satisfaction.

What are some of your greatest accomplishments that you would list?

I want to use the idea about choosing to keep my son after his adoption had already taken place, and how successful at being a single mom I am, going to school full time, and working two jobs... and realizing that I am doing so well at something I thought I could not handle...Do you guys think that its not appropriate?

I dont want to put a sob story in but I cant think of somthing to write about!!

HELP ME!!!!

thanks :)

Any academic accomplishments? Or work related to nursing accomplishments,? Many single moms have to work hard I get where they are and I respect that. However it might not set you apart just because of that fact

I would focus on something else too, like volunteer experience or work experience. Something different. Not that your accomplishments as a single mom are not amazing. They are. But you want to stand out. Maybe there was a particular occurrence in your volunteer or work experience or even personally that shaped your decision to become a nurse. My daughter works as an admissions rep at a prestigious university and she tells me that essays really do make or break some applications. Make sure your grammar is spot on, open your essay with an attention grabber, and you'll be good. She also said that poor grammar means immediate file 13. Good luck!

Yes, there are many, many single moms out there and we all work hard. Plus I don't want to be catty or anything but you took your son back after the adoption had taken place? That could hit a nerve with someone so I would keep that out. I'm glad it worked out for you but probably absolutely broke the hearts of the adoptive parents. And if anyone feels strongly about that, you could be out just based on that. I would focus on academic accomplishments and any volunteer experiences you have had. How you have learned to love school now or how awesome your grades are and how that gives you satisfaction. Maybe helping someone while volunteering at a home or hospital? Those kind of things.
