Nursing requirements by States

I don't know when this site was last updated, but it's a bit old, check out CA, lol.

It does give some indications where it helps to eliminate the SSN requirements for those that don't have one. Maybe others here can update their own findings thru personal experience or those others or internet sources and post up here.

Here's another updated and better information on those asking in specific about SSN requirements and what States do or don't require them. While some states don't require them, just know that to be able to "work", you must possess a valid SSN.

I'm not endorsing the above website or their business, it's the information they provide that is of value. Print it out for future reference and just know that the SSN requirement can change at any time, as soon ALL 50 states will require a SSN to apply at some point, if they don't yet.

*** Another word of practical matter: find the state you want to work and practice once you pass that state's NCLEX-RN and forget about trying to find the "easiest, fastest and cheapiest" state, as having to endorse (transfer) to another state only means you have to still MEET that other's states' requirements, meaning you're wasting more money and time waiting for results. Stick to one state and concentrate your efforts into meeting that most desired state. Obviously, avoid the States that are enforcing the concurrency issues.

*** There are some states that may now require having a copy of your local PH nursing license as part of the requirements and not mentioned in the link above, since this requirement is fairly new, such as NV now needs a copy as of Jan. 2013. Also know that some state (NM) must submit or sign a form that states you will not transfer or endorse your NM to another state within a few years, as they are trying to stop being a "stepping stone". I'm not sure what happens to your license if one tries to endorse without a good and valid reason, again, it's a new requirement that started in Sept.-Oct. 2012, maybe they could deny or reject the transfer.

*** VT is incorrect, as SSN is now required as of May, 2012.
