I don't understand your question? But, I would think that the school already has a set of order if you are placed in a waiting list. So if there was someone who had a better score/point/gpa than you it would already be set in that order, so that the highest ranking ones get called first and then go down that list.

And as to it being unfair, if you really think about it, What other way can nursing schools rule out how to pick their students, if it's not by grades? This is the only way for them to know who is able to pass their program and pass the NCLEX.

What I DO find unfair is schools like TWU, who give their students (those that have taken more than 30 credits at TWU), an extra 0.4 points added to their overall GPA, just for Nursing application purposes. This is such BS! that's why it's so hard to get into their programs b/c of course if you're transferring, and you have a 3.2 GPA and someone from TWU also has that 3.2, they will have a 3.6 GPA now b/c of this little exception for them!

I have gone to 2 different CC's. Both operate the same way. You apply for NS and they calculate how many points you have. If you are the top 30 (or 45 for the other CC) you get in. They also have an alternate list although I am not sure how many they have there. So if someone declines admission into the nursing program, they will pull someone from the list of alternates. But if you don't get in, you have to reapply every semester until you either get into the program or find somewhere else to go. It is all based on your grades and I completely agree with pinknbd_99. There has to be some way to "weed through" all the applicants. So many people apply and they want to make sure they are getting serious applicants who will pass the NCLEX.

Let me rephrase the question or try to explain the situation. I took the accuplacer and found that I would need to take intermediate algebra and then college algebra before I could even apply to the nursing and while I would be taking the algebra then I would also be taking some pre reqs and then I would apply in May to get into nursing in Aug. and depending on my grades and accuplacer they would score my rate. If someone else applied with higher scores then I would get moved down on the list. Keep in mind that they had 72 applicants for 20 spaces last year and this is once a yr. for the RN and on the LVN Program there is a wait list for 9mo. to a yr. It is my understanding that as long as someone else has a higher score than you then they go before you. This is fine but for you to have to reapply every yr and hope you can make one of the 20 spaces is not really fair in my opinion. I understand that you have to be able to pass the NCLEX and I also realize that they have to be able to weed out the people not cut out for nursing. Just because someone scores really well doesn't necessarily mean they will be a compassionate, caring nurse. Not everyone going to college is in their 20's or 30's.

I do understand what you're saying. But alot of this problem is

1. Your school doesn't accept enough students, so competition is VERY HIGH. Hence, why their so picky with good grades.

2. The reason they don't accept enough students is b/c of the low staff rate that they have. If your school only accepts 20 students, this means that they ONLY have 2 CLINICALS instructors for that school, b/c the rules for nursing school say ONLY 10 students PER NURSING CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR....that being said, you either live in a VERY surburban area where there really isn't too much nurses that want a PAYCUT to teach when they could work and earn MORE money.

Another thing you can look into is another nursing program. You have to apply everywhere!

You know, I visited Phoenix about a year ago and they had a facility there that accepted students a little differently. (Yes I know its Phoenix AZ but if they have one there maybe they will have one in one of our bigger cities!) They made you take an entrance test and believe it or not, if you did well, then they had a spot for you in their next class. Gosh, I can't remember the name of that place! It seems like it was some sort of technical college but they only taught medical/dental (ie dental assistant, LVN, RN, xray tech, etc.) I looked into it while there to see if I had to move to get into a program:chuckle! They were really expensive though. For the RN program, they pushed you through in 1 1/2 yrs and it was like $40,000 or something crazy like that!

Other than that, my advice is to apply to all colleges within communting distance. If you are willing to move, then I would apply, apply, apply. You know, all of us didn't get into a program the first time we tried. I applied to a college about a year ago. I didn't get into the RN program but they did accept me into their LVN program. I declined because my husband and daughter were in a near fatal accident. We have since moved. I applied to the college here and was extremely blessed. I did manage to get in the first time I applied here. That being said, I know alot of people who have applied 3 semesters in a row and still haven't been accepted into the program. I know it is extremely discouraging but if you heart is in nursing then just keep your chin up and keep applying!
