Nursing Program Extortion!

Published

Last semester I wrote about several issues with the nursing program that I am in. This semester has seen some improvement with the exception of the students being extorted!!

Three weeks AFTER the semester started we were assigned over $300 in fees. Two weeks after that we were told we had to buy a HESI package that costs $316 and we would not pass the course if we did not purchase this program. We were also extorted last semester when we were told we had to take the math calc class that semester (they were not offering it in the summer like they had in past summers). If we didn't take the course that semester we could not move forward to the next semester. This was told to us in the first two weeks of the semester....Oh and the class started at 3:00 pm. I am in an evening program with many students with daytime jobs. I can't begin to tell you how much stress that caused me...having to choose between a program that I worked so hard to get into and my day job. Ultimately, they offered a class at 3:00 and 6:00 pm which allowed many of us to continue (but of course we had to unexpectedly come up with that money as well).

Oh and the fees for the spring semester went up $1,000 without any advanced notice to help students prepare for that shock. Our president proudly told the community that they've made major improvements to the school without raising tuition. Right! They just added exorbitant fees.

I'm so over this program but of course I'm basically stuck. I don't take kindly to having my feet held to the fire and I am strongly considering reporting the program to the State Board of Nursing. Any advice would be appreciated.
