Hi, I'm glad I found a place where I can talk about my career in nursing. I have to say I've been feeling apprehensive about getting into the school of nursing. I recently applied to 3 additional nursing schools and I'm hoping of getting in by next spring. I've lost hope and actually cried of all the anger and frustration I have inside. I try to maintain my hopes and dreams and tell myself I'm going to get in eventually. I'm 24 and I've gone through so many changes and struggles in my life and I feel that nursing school is not gonna happen for me. My GPA is a 3.0 do you think that this GPA would get me into a nursing program. What should I know and keep in mind in terms of trying to do the right things in order to get into the nursing program. Thank you.

I'm in the same boat as you are. Had many life changing experiences finally at age 29 (will be thirty in two weeks YIKES) I found my chosen career. I have a pre-nursing gpa of 3.14 but for my school they were stoked that they had alot of applicants that applied that were 3.0 or better. I think it depends on the school and the competition. My school is taking 60 BSN and 35 ASN students this fall. Roughly 180 students applied for the ASN program and a little over 100 for the BSN. So doing some quick math if everyone applying was qualified (they said it's more like half) than I have a 1 in 3.3 chance of getting in. If only half are qualified I have a 1 in 1.4 chance of getting in much better odds plus some of the ASN/BSN apps are duplicates from people applying to both programs. I have my fingers crossed should know either way by the end of this week. I'm already preparing myself by checking out NET prep books and so forth. At this school you take the NET after acceptance and if you don't pass it you have to take an additional Nursing class. Good Luck!!

The criteria to get into nursing school is different for all schools. My community college doesn't consider your GPA (as long as it's a 3.0) or NET scores for entrance. The only requirements to apply are completing the prerequisites which are Microbiology, A&P and a Nursing theory class. You either enter the program from the chronological list or the points list. Out of 40 students a semester only 10 come in off the chronological list, 30 from the points list. You get points for the classes you take, the better the grades - the more points. Each school should have an orientation you can attend which will explain their entrance procedures.

Dont be so hard on yourself:) as I have found, a lot of schools look at the "whole person" not just the GPA.....I was young and stupid during my undergrad and my GPA (which was much lower than yours) reflected that...I should have done better but my grades were not a reflection of my ability. Fortunetly for me I found a program that looked at all my personal situations and assessed me as a whole not just my GPA...im currently working toward my masters in nursing and am making straight A's:) My program just required me to take the GRE just to make sure that I would be able to keep up (scored 1305 woo hoo! i was sooo nervous about it)...i would call around and try to arrange a face to face interview/informal meeting...you may be pleasantly suprised:) try a small private college, they tend to be a bit more personal that a large college!:) good luck!
