Hi all - I need some quick advice if possible. I have an interview with a head of nursing education for a community college in 2 days. I am trying to get my "professional portfolio" updated - I haven't updated it in almost 2 years! Anyway - can anyone give me any insight as to what they include in theirs for an interview? I have my transcripts, recent review from my current job, awards I've won, letters from 2 patients I've cared for, and samples of my clinical guidelines and handout I created for my current clinical group I am teaching now. Anything I'm missing? I am so nervous!! Any advice/help would be appreciated! :)

Come up with a quick "mini" lecture on how you would teach a topic. Include maybe lecture objectives, some PPT slides, any handouts you'd give the class, case studies. While awards and reviews are helpful, if they are from hospital nursing, they don't reflect necessarily how you would be as an educator. You need to showcase that. When I went for my interview, they had me give a 10 minute lecture and make it real. This really shows that you understand about adult learning principles and know how to reach students of varying ages. This was more important to them than any portfolio. Even though I brought my portfolio, they looked through it quickly, but was more interested in HOW I would teach. Good nurses don't always make good educators. Think back on your good and bad classes you have taken and start there. Good luck!
