Hi everyone,
I will be relocating to the Hampton, VA area this summer with my fiance and I'm trying to look for job possibilities. I'm currently working on a telemetry floor... and as of this summer I'll have about 6-7 months experience as a nurse. I've contact 2 hospitals in the Hampton area and they both have told me that I need a one years worth of experience before I can apply for regular RN job postings (I am still welcome to apply for new grad postings, but those postings are more competitive with current new grads applying I hear).
I was thinking about trying to look for work in LTC, home health, etc... something not hospital based. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestings. Again, I'll have about 6 months experience when I'm looking to move (May).
Thanks in advance!

Depending on exactly where you live, you might want to look beyond Hampton. A lot of people commute "across the water" to work in hospitals in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, etc. You should also be looking in Newport News and Williamsburg.
Depending on your exact location, these commutes aren't that bad -- especially if you are only doing it 3 times per week (e.g. three 12-hour shifts).

if you have only been a nurse 6-7 months don't go to LTC yet unless that is what you REALLY want. Better to take a hospital job as a new grad. Keep applying and broaden your commute.
Good Luck!

Good Luck to you. I know someone who moved to Hampton Roads last year and was a new grad. She could not find a job whatsoever even after searching for 3 months. She told me it was really tough out there. So just take your time and know it will take awhile before something comes up.
