Nursing - my future 2nd career

Published

Hi everyone,

I currently hold a B.A. in English and Journalism and have decided to make the switch to Nursing for a variety of reasons. I have applied to EKU ADN program here in Kentucky (the accelerated option I believe to be too demanding b/c I don't have the reqs completed yet and I want to raise my GPA b4 doing BSN) I am a 24 y.o. single mom who was hitting a wall career-wise. I pretty much have 2 options with my current degree: teach or...hmmm yeah teach. lol At the center of all I love to do is help people. I have worked in skincare and cosmetics since I was 19 and finally figured out that's where I belong. I'm great at what I do and even have my own freelance makeup company, but it's not enough both career -wise and financially.

My mom has been involved in the medical field for about 20 years now (most of my life- she is a CMA, CNA and former medical transcriptionist). She is the one who inspired me to take a 2nd/3rd/4th look at nursing. I realized that it's not all about starting IVs and giving babies shots lol - you build relationships with people, u impact their everyday lives and you get new experiences every day! Also there is critical thinking involved and the ability to make quick and educated decisions on behalf of someone else.

I would love to work in a derm office, in bariatrics or in plastic surgery. The past years I have been working in services that enhance your appearance and now I'm so excited to better understand the technical things that go behind it and explore more about our bodies.

I totally seem like the most unlikely candidate, but I am dedicated to helping, learning and being the best Nurse I can be. Just wanted to post an intro and get some thoughts/ideas/suggestions from anyone who has made nursing their 2nd/3rd career and why?

Thanks

C

Hi,

I'm in the same boat too! I have an English/Theater degree and now want to go to nursing school. I am a single mom as well. I'm taking prerequs this summer and applying to programs that begin in Jan 2013. Fingers crossed!

Have a nutrition and an education degree. I also have 3 kids and I'm in my second semester working on prereq's. I'm applying to school for my BSN in September. I've always wanted to be a nurse, but I let someone talk me out of it when I first started college, so I feel as though I'm getting back on track now.

Specializes in Neonatal ICU.

I am 28 with a B.A. in Law & Justice Studies and am currently working as an Executive Assistant. I decided about a year ago to start pursuing Nursing school. I had always been fascinated by and interested in the medical field, but let my lack of self-confidence get in the way of pursuing it at a younger age. I graduated from college almost 6 years ago, and think it was necessary for me to get some work experience before pursuing this second career. Sometimes I wish I had realized what I wanted to do back when I was 18, but everyone's journey is different and I don't really have any regrets. :)

The biggest advice I can give you regarding the application process is to be patient (I'm so the pot calling the kettle "black" here, lol) and be sure to do your research. I've been pursuing this dream for a year and still haven't gotten to the Nursing school part! I first decided to apply to an ADN program because I didn't really know or understand my other options. This ADN program has an 18-month waiting list, so when I decided to apply, I only had a few weeks to get my application in. The due date was March 31, 2011 for the class that starts September 2012. I rushed to submit my transcripts and take my TEAS, and got everything in on time. And this ADN program still had prerequisite science courses that I hadn't taken, so I started knocking them out last summer.

Along the road, I decided to do some proper research and realized that it might make more sense for me to pursue an Accelerated BSN. It's going to cost me more money, but all the programs are so competitive in my area, so I feel like it would be well worth it in the end. I had to take the same prereqs for both programs, so I decided to bite the bullet and applied to Jefferson's Accelerated Pathway to the MSN program back in September. I'm still waiting for a final decision, but if all works out, I will start in September 2012 (same time as the ADN I applied to!).

Now, I am single and do not have any children. If I were in your shoes, I may feel differently and may have chosen a different path. The most important thing is to figure out a path that you're comfortable with, stay strong, and keep pursuing your dream no matter what other people say! Good luck with everything!!! :)

thanks everyone for the encouragement. I am excited and sure this is what I want to be doing! :)

I am in the military and will retire in about 3 years. I am 45 and am completing my pre-reqs and planning to apply for the spring 2013 semester. I hold a bachelors in Business and a Masters in Health Care Management. My first goal was to start and operate a hospice for the homeless but I started looking at nursing because I'd like a more hands on approach. So far, I'm doing pretty good. My biggest fear is how in the world am I going to perform clinicals while working a full-time job? I don't have the option of quitting my job, the military will not even hear of letting me go to school full-time and I would be a fool to forego my retirement. However, if I believe that this is what I was meant to do, then things will work out one way or the other. I'm sure you will do just fine! Good luck :-)

Hey there thanks for sharing! I'm sure things will work out for you. I have to do a lot of balancing in my life as well.

now that I am nearing the end of all my pre reqs, I am once again considering an Accelerated BSN. It WILL cost my $, but I think it will be a worth while investment. I'm looking into programs tha t combine the BSN with an MSN and/or give me the option of pursuing it shortly thereafter. Let me know how things go with you.
