nursing in europe

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has experience working in foriegn countries at American hospitals (military bases or embassys I'm guessing). I'm a student but I'm exploring options for when I graduate. I used to work in Italy and I'd love to return but I'm afraid of jumping right in to an Italian hospital b/c of the language differences. I'd love to hear any stories others might have about experiences abroad and how to get involved...

I had a clinical instructor who worked for a few months in the UK. He loved it, one of his best nursing experiences he said. One good thing he pointed out that he liked was being able to work in English with English speaking pts, but take 2-4 day trips all over Europe during his non-working time. He said it was a great place to start, especially if you don't speak any foreign languages. Just a thought...

thank you :) Thats a good idea to look in the UK. I've heard rumors that the salary and conditions are worse (lots of patients per nurse etc) but I need to look into it more because the source of that info was just one person's experience .

changes have occurred with immigration to the UK recently and made it a bit harder for a work permit. Unfortunately hospitals have to employ via this route UK, EU and lastly elsewhere in the world. There is also a lot of redundancies and newly qualified nurses unable to find work due to financial difficulties with hospitals. You will also have to go through a process with the NMC our governing body. Check out the overseas section at NMC Internet
