Leaving job for a temp position?

  1. I interviewed a few weeks ago for a job that seems like it would be my "dream job". I put that in quotations because I'm not really sure what my dream job is or will be until I actually do it. It's a position as a research nurse working on an exciting cutting-edge treatment at a major research hospital.

Sounds like a no-brainer, except that it's a temporary position. When I interviewed they told me there were 4 temp positions and 1 permanent position. I made my preferences known that I preferred the permanent position. Now they've contacted me to check references for the temp position. There's a small chance that this could lead to another permanent opportunity at the hospital, but nothing is guaranteed. I'd basically be quitting my stable, permanent position (which I'm unhappy at) for a 6-month temp position that could leave me in a precarious position come the end of summer.

    Any insight?

Can you go PRN at your current job?

Yikes! Would you be able to cope with a "worst case scenario" - job ends, and you can't find a new one? Do you have another source of financial support so this outcome would not be a disaster? If not, I vote "no". Don't jeopardize your future by taking this type of risk. Share this information with the new company & hiring manager - they may decide to change the offer if they want you badly enough.

I could ask to go per diem or part time at my current job but many people have tried to do this in the past and been denied by management.

Not having a full time job would make things very difficult although I could technically cope. DH and I are going to start trying to have a baby soon so that would really change a lot.

Will have to give this a lot more thought and prayer!
