Case Management or Geriatric NP

Will starting a career in homecare as a new RN hider me from becoming a Geriatric NP? Or should I just specialize in case management?

Here's my background:

LPN for 5 years working in a LTC/subacute setting then recently graduated with my BSN. I've always had a passion for case management but then I thought about pursuing a NP program in the near future . I've applied to hospitals but haven't gotten an interview. I recently got a job offer as a homecare RN with a lot of flexibility and a good salary however Im worried that if I don't get hospital experience it might hider my from becoming a well rounded RN and future NP!!!!

I know there is a mantra here that acute care experience is a prerequisite for everything good and holy in nursing.

However you are not coming in off the street as a new grad. You also do not have other job offers. As a home care RN, you will be seeing the exact population you eventually hope to work with as a provider.

I graduated many years ago. It took about 6 months to know that the hospital was in no way for me. That is all the acute care experience I ever had, although later I did work at a psychiatric hospital.

I have a tendency to think that things happen for a reason.

One thought. Look into Geriatric NP programs to see if they require acute care RN experience. I bet they don't.
