Nursing in Bavaria, Germany

Published

Hallo All,

I hope someone can answer my questions and also help someone who has a similar situation. I'm currently living in Erlangen, Germany for 2.5 yrs now as an immigrant-- no limitations(unbefristet) to stay. I graduated as a nurse (BSN degree) in the Philippines then moved to U.S and worked there as RN-BSN for almost 10 yrs. I did already German lessons and did the B2 German level certificate recently and now waiting for my results. I also sent the required documents needed for Recognition (Annerkenung) for my profession. The only thing that is missing is the B2 German certificate. Few questions:

1. How do I get the a working permit here (Arbeitsgenehmigung/erlaubnis)?

2. Where do I get that?

3. How long does it take to be approved?

4. What are the requirements needed?

I did a job interview in the hospital and they told me I need a working permit. I thought they will issue that to me like my husband's company did. They also give me 2 options: a.) I can work as Nursing assistant (Pflegehelferin) while waiting for my recognition; b.)I'll wait until I receive the approval of my recognition and work as a nurse.

5. Do I still need to do the German State Exam for Nursing? I understand it's a case to case basis and which country you came from, graduated and have a working experience, etc..

Maybe someone had the same experience like me or know a little bit about it. Thank you all!!

Hi,

As far as I know this is the process:

Registered general nurse (m/f)

but this pages outline who can get which work permit and how:

Burger aus Drittstaaten

What I wonder is when you loved to Germany, did you have the US citizenship or not? If you are a citizen of some countries it is easier to get the Arbeitserlaubnis, but if you are not from those countries it is a different process. Also, I think there is still a special agree between Germany and the Philippines because there is shortage of nurses.

What I do wonder though is what happened when you moved to Germany. Unless you are a US citizen, I think you should have gone to the right authorities to get the aufenthaltserlaubnis and the arbeitserlaubnis.

No hospital can get you the arbeitserlaubnis - the process does not work that way. They will not be able to hire you without it.

Once you have your legal situation straightened out and are Krankenschwester, they should be able to hire you.

If you are in Germany without the proper legalities it could be very difficult.

Hi Nutella,

I am a US citizen and I am also legal to live here in Germany. I came here because of my husband's work with Permanent residency permit. What I remembered is the Immigration office here said that I am also allowed to work in Germany, but it wasn't specied in my Residency card. It states only: see paper....

You need to go back to where you got the paper / permit or write them and state your problem. No hospital will hire you without a work permit. Whatever was said does not matter because you need it in writing. Contact the immigration authority and clarify ...
