Nursing Assistant position

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hello All

I am planning to apply for a Nursing Assistant position in the high risk antepartum unit of a hospital. But I have no previous hospital experience. I have worked as a Residential Aide at a group home with Developmentally disabled individuals, which required me to give total care (shower, toileting, feeding, etc.) to two of the residents there. The reason for this post is to ask if this may qualify me for the position. I have worked in this setting for 2+ years and I am planning on taking a CNA class this summer. The reason I am waiting to take the CNA class is because I am currently in college (prenursing) and my semester doesn't end until the beginning of May. This is currently like my dream job because I wish to specialize in OB/Maternal/Child nursing. Do you guys think that I have a chance? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Also could anyone tell me what duties I would have to fufill in this particular position?

Thanks :)

You are not state certified as a CNA now? If I have that right, you may not be qualified for that position in a hospital right now. Unless it's a place that will train you there and do that as you work, you most likely need to be certified BEFORE you are hired. I would think that a high risk type of setting would require any aides to be experienced prior to hire. That may be wrong and it's definitely worth enquiring about. You will get a chance to talk to them about what specifically you need to do to BE hired there when you are ready. Good luck in your class!

Thanks. I did apply already though. I contacted the human resources department and reviewed the job description and it looks like something that I am totally capable of. The rest is up to them. I plan to contact them again to inquire about the status of my application. Wish me luck.

Honestly you don't have the qualifications to work in that unit. That unit is very specific and it's considered a specialty. They're pretty peticular on who gets to work there. Usually those postions go in house first because most people want to work that department. Take it from someone who tried to apply for a transfer in that unit. There were about 11 in house applicants and a few dozen outside of the hospital that went for that position. It ended up going to someone with 13-15 years experience in the hospital. That person was in the float pool with me so they had experience in that unit from time to time. It's not an easy unit to get into. Either good luck and hope you can get an interview.
