Dear Nurse Beth,

I really enjoyed your book "Your last Nursing Class: How To Land Your First Nursing Job" Do you Have any advice on for the new grad that landed the job, i.e. Tips on how to succeed and perform the best the first year on the job; Perhaps a book you can recommend addressing the first year as an RN. Thank you for your time and help

Dear First Year,

Thank you kindly, I'm so glad my book helped you.

Kati Kleber wrote a book called "Becoming Nursey" about her first year that is a good read.

I work with wonderful new nurses every day, and the ones who do the best are open and teachable.

They learn from their mistakes, keep going and never stop learning.

Know it will be uncomfortable and it takes about a year to become competent and confident.

Try not to compare yourself to others but set goals for yourself.

Have a sense of humor and make friends at work.

Every time time you go in a room to do a procedure, think it through "What's the worst that can happen?"

"If that happens, what will I do?" Then you'll be prepared and not panic.

If others tell you you are doing well, believe it. Celebrate your successes and progress.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
