Claxton-Hepburn Nurses to Hold Strike Vote Next Week -

Ogdensburg, NY, May 20, 2002 -

After an unproductive negotiating session this afternoon, registered nurses at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center have announced that they will conduct a strike vote on Wednesday, May 28, and Thursday, May 29.

Despite the nurses' overwhelming rejection of the hospital's contract offer on May 3, management returned to the table this morning with virtually the same proposal, prompting the nurses to schedule the strike vote.

Represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), the nurses are seeking to create a safer environment for patient care. They are seeking to establish a set of safe RN-to-patient guidelines and develop incentives to make Claxton-Hepburn a more attractive employment choice for local RNs. Staffing in some units has been as low as one nurse for 17 patients. The most recent three-year contract for the 150 RNs expired January 31.

NYSNA is the professional association for registered nurses in New York with more than 34,000 members statewide. A multipurpose organization, NYSNA fosters high standards of nursing education and practice and works to advance the profession through legislative activity and collective bargaining. NYSNA is a constituent of the American Nurses Association (ANA) and its labor arm, the United American Nurses (UAN), an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.>>>>>
