Back injury

Nurses Disabilities

Published

I am an RN who was medically discharged from the Air Force due to a back injury (Rhomboid muscle strain). I need a job without heavy lifting: can't move or turn patients in bed, etc. I have been looking for a telephonic nursing or clinic nursing job for about a month in the San Antonio area. I have not had much luck. Does anyone have any advice on obtaining a nursing or nursing-related medical job that does not require heavy lifting/pushing/pulling? I am open minded about getting reeducated or certified, the GI bill will pay for it, but I don't want to walk away from nursing unless I really have to. Does anyone have any advice? Anyone with experience in telephonic, medical billing, or clinic nursing?

Definitely take advantage of the GI Bill. You earned those benefits! Keep in mind, too, that the GI Bill includes a housing stipend if you're taking on-campus classes (though I think that's changing to allow veterans and their dependents to get a stipend if they are taking on-line courses).

In your shoes, I would look to getting a MSN in nursing education, nursing administration, or informatics (though some informatics programs are now at the DNP level). Being a NP might be too hard on your back. You could also look into doing nursing research---again, not so tough on your back.

I hurt my back years ago---muscle strain---but have had problems ever since. So you're wise to think of the long-term as well as what you can do right now.

I wish you the best and hope that you find something suitable.

MDS is in high demand. They have great program through this site MDS 3.0.
