Hi! I've been working psych for a little over a year now and have been considering going back to school for NP in psych. This topic might have been made before, but I was just curious about what a typical day looks like where you work. What kind of care do you provide? Do you work inpatient or outpatient? Is it more counseling based? Any input would be appreciated.

I work outpatient only. I typically see about 15-20 medication management appointments a day for the people on my own caseload. The times for each appointment vary on complexity and the history I have with the client (typically 5-20 minutes). No therapy at all really. I also do about one new psych eval a day for an hour. I work 10 hour days 4 days a week. Its a pretty typical and (mostly) a good gig.

I am in long term care. Many of my residents are very low functioning, and a big part of my job is staff education and diagnosis. Some of the cases are very medically complex. My chief role is to prescribe and manage the regimen. I see 15-20 people a day and occasionally more.
I do a little counseling of course, mostly supportive psychotherapy.
I don't miss the psychotherapy I used to do. My experience is that 99% of the people don't want to change, they want the world to change for them. It was mostly a waste of good oxygen.
