Any one have experience with moving across state lines?

I am doing a bit of research into how I would obtain my NP license if I were to move to another state, I believe this is licensure by endorsement? Mainly it would be the west coast states CA, WA, OR. The CA BON information was rather confusing, would it be 'method two' via the application?! Another concern is I heard from some physicians I know who moved states (they did East Coast) that the process took 9+ months, fortunately for them the break in income wasn't an issue! They said to watch out for how long the ACTUAL paperwork takes and of course that's not listed on state web sites! I know it's a different license but their warning was about the process of endorsement of licenses in general.

If anyone has actually gone through the process do you mind sharing with me? PM is fine if you'd rather not post publicly.

The main thing you have to do is check out the BON for the state you plan on moving to. There are also other issues such as is your current state a compact state. Put "Map of NLC States" in your search engine. For example, I declare Texas as my home state and work as an NP in New Mexico. I do not have to get a NM RN license, just a NM NP license. If I were to declare NM as my home state, then I would get RN endorsement in NM.

It took NM 8 business days to give me an NP license and they actually called me to tell me it was ready!

Moved from Michigan to California in late 2009. The endorsement process wasn't really that horrendous if you prepare months before your actual move and you familiarize yourself with the rules of the new state you're moving into. California has more requirements for NP's than Michigan in terms of requiring a Furnishing Number to write prescriptions something we didn't do in Michigan. This shouldn't be a problem for an experienced NP as you can easily show proof of having completed supervised "furnishing" experience for at least six months from you home state. The other parts of the endorsement process is pretty much "as expected" -- sending transcripts from undegrad and grad programs directly from the schools attended, sending original BON verification of licenses straight from the original BON. The process took three months.

I have been doing locums for 2.5 years and have worked in MA, NM, TX, CA, CO during this time.

I am licensed in all these states and just applied for FL license.

If its a compact state you only have to get the NP license. MOST East and West coast states are NOT compact state. So you have to apply for RN and NP license.

When I got the CA license I got a temp license but took 9 months to get the perm license. And my temp was going to expire and I still hadn't received the Perm license...

Mainly its an issue of paperwork and sending them money. FL license costs about $600 for everything they require, online class, fingerprinting, etc.. and they have the most paperwork I have ever done.

NM was a few pages and had a license in a week.

I would not move or quite a job until you have the license. Call the board and ask how long it will take.

emtneel,

Could you share your experience with TX BON NP endorsement process? How long did it take? I am planning on getting my NP license endorsed in TX soon.

Thank you!!
