Despite existing laws, corruption and unethical hiring practices persist in the Philippines, alongside inconsistent oversight and enforcement.
In the Philippines, credentials and licensure are issued and governed by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) or the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), depending on the specific course and qualifications.
If your friend has completed a legitimate midwifery course from a CHED-accredited institution and received the proper credentials, these credentials cannot be voided by a head nurse or anyone else at a hospital unless there was some form of fraudulent behavior, misrepresentation, or irregularity in the application or issuance process. It's important to note that licensure and credentials are subject to regulation by the PRC, and only this body has the legal power to revoke or invalidate a license.
The situation your friend is facing, where a head nurse is asking for a bribe, is an unfortunate example of corruption, which is a serious issue in many places. If your friend is pressured, they should report this behavior to the hospital's higher management or the PRC for the Philippines. Bribery and corruption are illegal, and there are often channels through which such incidents can be reported anonymously or safely.
To summarize:
It's important that your friend does not give in to such demands and pursues their career with integrity.
Very best wishes,
Nurse Beth
