Nurse Manager Interview

Published

Hello,

I am a nursing student and I am required to write an essay for my nursing leadership class. The topic is to interview a nurse manager in regards to their leadership skills and characteristics. If anyone would like to help me out, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you! Below are the interview questions.

1. An introduction of the leader you are interviewing (no names or places should be identified),

2. How long have you been a nurse?

3. The type of leadership style you utilize.

4. What characteristics does you believe are important for effective leadership?

5. What techniques does you use to empower their staff/colleagues?

6. Tell me what leadership position you have in this organization?

7. What formal/informal leadership positions have you held in your career?

8. How did your organization prepare you for your position?

9. Describe your leadership style or your model of leadership for me?

10. What do you consider the most important characteristics of a nurse leader?

11. You give me an example of how you empower your employees?

12. Describe a change that you and your staff/colleagues have been directly involved in this year?

13. What advice do you have for a novice nurse /novice nurse leader?

14. Is there anything else that you would like to tell me?

Thank you!

Hello, and welcome to AN!

I'm going to do you a kindness and tell you why no one should be answering your questions here.

Your assignment was to interview a nurse manager....and it's a good one! BUT (and it's a very big 'but') there's no way to determine on a message board such as this if the person who is willing to answer these questions is truly a NM....or, frankly, even a nurse.

Over the years, I have seen people pose as MANY things they are not. I seriously doubt your instructor wants you to interract anonymously over the internet with someone whose credentials you cannot possibly verify.

Call a hospital, speak to the nurse recruiter (or HR?) and ask to be put in touch with a NM who is 'student-friendly' :) Call a medical practice, dialysis center, outpatient clinic, you name it: NMs can be found in many settings.

NOTHING replaces a face-to-face interview, and that is what your instructor is asking you to have. You might need to do a phone conversation, but if you offered to meet for a cup of coffee, I'd bet you'd have takers :)

Best of luck to you!
