Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Published

Hey all!

I'm currently a senior BSN student and as the school year is winding down, I am starting to think about how I am going to tackle the enormous amount of student loans that I have accumulated in the 6 years that took me to get where I am. I've been searching for unorthodox ways to pay off my loans and I happen to stumble upon the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program. I've tried searching allnurses but could not find a post about people's experiences in the program.

For those currently partaking in the program or have done it in the past, I just want to know how your experience with it is going/how it went for you! Feel free to share where this program took you! I currently live in the east coast but I was thinking of using this program as a means to travel as well.

Those programs should be viewed like scholarships: lovely if you can get in, but nothing to bank on or build plans around. By all means, apply. But your priority and surest route out of debt needs to be to get that first job, live frugally, and pay those six years down as fast as practicable. I personally know several BSN and even APRN nurses who are watching their interest and principal balloon as they "wish on a star" for some miracle to make it all go away. One of my preceptors has her DNP and over $300,000 in debt. It came about because each step of the way she chose to ignore reality defer payments as much as possible, dodge creditors, and basically bet on the lottery of getting some debt payoff grant. At this point I doubt she will ever pay it off. Don't let that be you.

I see what you're saying and I couldn't agree more. I know I will have to work as a nurse first and foremost to pay off my debt while gaining that experience. One of the big reasons why this LRP interested me in the first place was because I thought I could use it to travel. Thank you for your feedback!

I actually just finished the nurse corps nursing scholarship program.

In addition to nurse corps, individual states have their own loan repayment programs. Working at Indian Health Service facilities on a res can also get you loan forgiveness. Worth checking out if you are willing to relocate to a rural area.
