discrimination in the workplace

Nurses Relations

Published

I am currently work as lpn in nursing facility i have face age (i am 22 years old ) and race discrimination in the workplace. i have worked at two different nursing and most of the older nurses always complain about being stress, tired and their workload. and they always seem to remind of me of being young. theres a always a certain race the dominant the facility as if they own the building. you have no say on what goes on just shut up and take the abuse

As an LPN, are you in a charge role? The only thing that you can control is your professionalism and your practice. Set clear expectations, and if they are not being followed, then you need to be aware of what your options are. That may be a write up, a discussion on expectations...any number of things. I would have discussion with your superior about how to deal effectively with the other staff.

If you are not in a charge role, I most certainly would meet any comment regarding your age/race with "Completely inappropriate, and not even related to what is happening at present". And then go about your day.

Another tactic is to say "I am SURE that your intent was NOT to sound unprofessional, however, your comments are inappropriate. With that being said, could you please help me in room 333 with a turn and reposition? Thanks!"

And the above comment examples could be made by you if these are direct comments TO you. Otherwise, the best piece of advice I ever got was to just walk away from the gossip, the chit-chat. There are other fish to fry. It only becomes your issue if you are the one in charge of making sure everyone is doing their jobs. Otherwise, do NOT engage.
