NPs... Who is your boss?

Any nps in a hospital setting have trouble with nursing administration ( non nps) trying to be the "boss" dispute having an immediate supervisor who is an MD?

Hi NurseKJ - I work in a couple of different hospitals and don't find that I encounter issues with nursing administration. I work in an independent practice state, so we are generally afforded the same privileges as our MD colleagues in the hospital. In both facilities, I answer directly to the medical director. All of the providers interface with nursing administration with respect to the day-to-day unit operations as well as to address issues that surface with patient care, nursing, logistics, etc. Essentially, most of the administrative issues for the unit are handled by nursing administration - I have never encountered direction on clinical issues from nursing administration. Overall, in my situation, I feel like the medical staff has a good working relationship with nursing administration.

My immediate supervisor is the CEO and not an MD. I am in an interesting position in that I am the DoN and an FNP. With the FNP hat I am , I join the outpatient psych medical director and inpatient psych medical director as the primary care director as an equal member of the medical staff executive committee. As the inpatient DoN I report to the CEO and join the Inpatient director of social work and inpatient medical director as an equal member of he hospital executive committee. I would not be concerned about reporting to a non-clinician for administrative issues (most CEO's are not clinicians after all) but as an APRN I would expect that you are treated as a member of the medical staff or the APRN staff with equal standing to the other providers.
