Are there any NPs here with their own practice? If so, are you the solo practitioner or do you work with other mid-levels?
Since I graduated NP school, I've always been employed but now, I've been considering opening up my own practice. I'm a little hesitant because I know of a couple of family physicians who opened up their own private practice as a solo practitioner and after 10 years, they closed because as they stated, it's just hard to be a business-owner/provider.
I just want to hear what's it like to be a solo practitioner/business-owner as a mid-level. I am, however, planning on opening my practice in an underserved area which is 40-45 minutes drive (one-way) from my house. I already have an experienced biller who is willing to help me set everything up.

Best wishes with this journey into nurse entrepreneurship!
Visit the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium which has a wealth of information regarding nurse led clinics.
Their book Nurse-Managed Health Centers Operations, Policy, and Opportunities will provide advice from those in the trenches having established NP health centers over the past 20+ years.
"The book delivers a wealth of comprehensive information for nurses who are considering opening their own clinics. Reinforced with best-practice models and case studies, it discusses what it takes to successfully start and run a nurse-managed health center"
Check with your states department of health regulations to verify if NP can own healthcare clinic as some states restrict ownership to physicians/non-profits/health care organizations. It will take much time to become a provider with your area health insurance providers so start early in this process.
Hope our NP experts can offer their sage advice.
