NP's in NM

I am an NP looking to move out of the cold midwest in about three years and settle somewhere out west. I have been checking out areas in NM and am pleased with the price range of the homes. I have checked out Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces. I am wondering if there is a favorable job market for NP's in NM. I am trained as an adult acute care NP with a cardiothoracic surgery/ICU employment background. I am also looking into possibly teaching nursing if I can't get an NP job. Anyone care to let me know what my chances are out there?

I can't speak directly to your question, except to say I'm in the Albuquerque area and read the "healthcare" classifieds every Sunday. That said, you need to know that NPs can practice independently in NM. In other words, you can hang your own shingle and go into private practice, if you desire. I do know that ads for NPs/PAs crop up occasionally in the newspaper, and my experience with the major health plans in the area indicates that they use NPs, as well. The Heart Hospital of NM (in Albuquerque) has several NPs on staff, if memory serves, so you might want to check them out.
