NPs and CNMs, chime in, nursing student needs guidance

Published

Hello wonderful people!

I am a new LPN (licensed last October, haven't worked yet) working on my RN and BSN. 22 years old living in south eastern Ohio. I will be done with the RN program in December, and finish the bachelor's in 2017 or so. My plan is to go straight into graduate school (also planning to work as an RN once I'm licensed, just don't have time with clinicals right now).

I'm torn between FNP and CNM, so I figured I'd come here and ask you wise saints for insight; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Advice, personal experiences, words of wisdom or warning, anything! I plan to try and shadow someone in both occupations before I finish the BSN, but I won't have time until this summer is over, and I'm dying for information! So anything you're willing to share, I'd be glad to have it :)

(And I hope this is the right place to post this!! :sorry:  )

You'll find a lot of this information in threads over the years in the archives. Good luck deciding!

Shadowing is one of the best things you can do, and if you have until 2017 when you are done, you may want to hold off on much predetermination until you have a chance to see and experience both NPs and CNM in action, as they have very different roles and day-to-day responsibilities.

Why are you considering each? What are your interests?
