I graduated last year and have not begun working as an NP yet. I recently interviewed at a private practice clinic. They are a new practice and they have one dr. and no midlevels. The office manager does not know a lot about hiring an NP, so I need to figure everything out! I just applied online for my NPI #. And I told him that I needed to work for 6 months before applying for my DEA (I live in MO., does anyone know if I am right)? Also, he seems pretty clueless, so what should I say about the collaborative agreement, surely the Dr. is aware that they need to write one up?? Any help or advice is appreciated! Also, is there anything else I need to do? I really need this job, so I have to get all this stuff figured out! Thanks!

Look on the web site and call them to make sure. Each state has their own requirements . You will need your DEA to prescribe-I don't think you would need to wait 6 months. Sometimes there is a separate state controlled substance license. Your BON might have sample collaborative agreements.

May 4, 2013 Looks like Missouri's regulatory requirements are restrictive:1. For Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority- must have completed 1000 hours of clinical practice (form available via BON website)- must have completed 300 hours of preceptorial experience in prescribing (form available via BON website)- must submit a "Statement of Controlled Substance Delegation Form" (http://pr.mo.gov/boards/nursing/APRN Application Instructions.pdf)Once above are received, the NP can be eligible for Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and Federal DEA.2. Collaborative Agreements with Physician required for NP practice.- sample document- BON rules explained in power point format- more BON rules from their websiteUnfortunately, our nurse practitioner programs seem weak in teaching new NP's the regulatory steps required to transition to practice.
