NP Specialty Programs

Hi!

I currently work as a pediatric clinical research nurse. I have always wanted to do research, and I want to continue to grow to the point where I can become a primary investigator. The studies I am currently on are neuro studies. I eventually would like to transfer and do oncology studies and gain the experience there. First question: Is there a nurse practitioner program that has subspecialties like neuro-oncology?

Second Question: Do I have to be an NP to become a principal investigator, or can I just obtain an MSN in research?

TIA!

If you want to do research, your best bet is a PhD which you can get in with a BSN. Many NP's like myself work in a provider role and have a panel of patients. While some are involved in research or administration, a big chunk of our role is being a healthcare provider.

Also know that PhD in Nursing focuses on Nursing Research though there is a push towards interdisciplinary collaboration so you may be able to tailor your study and dissertation in Pediatric Neuro-Onc if you like.
