? about NP scope of practice in TN xtxt

U.S.A. Tennessee

Been thinking about becoming an NP in TN.

What are the duties of a NP

what is the difference btwn. NP and MD?

THanks for any and all help.

I'm not from TN - but how about checking the nurse practice act with your local BON? That might give you a starting point?

Good luck! :)

NP does lots of primary care type things, preventive health, lacerations, etc. There area also many NP's that work with specialists and many ER's employ NP's. The big difference between NP and MD is that NP is based upon the nursing model of care. In Tennessee NP's can have their own UPIN number and bill Medicare, insurance, etc. for services- usually at 85% of MD rate if not using MD UPIN. NP's also have rx priv. and DEA numbers. PA's have to work under a MD. NP's have to collaberate with MD. A NP can open their own practice but have to have a MD to audit charts occas., etc. I am hoping to be done with my NP in 3 years!!! I want to do home visits in the rural area that I live in.

That is actually what I want to do as well. visit people in the rural communities for Dr. visits and such. THanks for answering my question, I appreciate it.

I will hopefully be done in 2 years with my MSN degree after this year.

What type of program are you in RN BSN??

anyways take care and good luck this year

How is the job market for a NP in the nashville area? I've looked everywhere on the web and there is not alot out there. I'm thinking of going to for the masters in nursing program to be a NP in women's health. But it costs a whole lot more to do that then just go get an associates and becoming a RN. Just wondering if I'd be wasting my money to do the masters.

Specializes in Clinical Risk Management.

Quite honestly, I wish that I'd gotten my MSN instead of my BSN. I'm wanting to go back to school but have found it difficult to do the extreme juggling act of full-time work, family, & school. I tried one class last spring & didn't feel like I'd done my best.

If you're eligible for a bridge program, consider it; especially if you haven't started a family...and if you won't have to work full-time while doing it.

I live in a VERY rural area, so I am doing my RN to BSN online through University of Phoenix. It is a pretty good program so far. I just wish that I had gone ahead with my BSN ten years ago- initially.

michellem-

I work with a nurse who is doing the msn/np program at Vanderbilt. She goes there for 4 or five days each semester and the clinicals she does in her community. She is really enjoying it.

I have a bachelors in business mgt and i was going to get an associates in nursing because it's cheaper to do it that way ( I already have $30k in student loans out). Does is matter in the long run whether I have a BSN or an associates in nursing plus a bachelor's in business mgt?

It doesn't matter in the long run if what your bachelors is in. I do know that some schools do an accelerated bridge program for non-nurses if you have a Bachelor degree:

I have applied to this program for Fall 2005 admission and am wondering what others have heard about it. One person in this string of messages knows someone who is enjoying the program, I see. I am wondering what the quality of the teaching is like, the student life, the culture of Nashville (I'm from Northern California for the last 26 years). I know the cost of living is a lot less.

I appreciated the post regarding the scope of practice for NP's in Tennessee, because I was wondering about that. Does anyone know about the job market for NP's in Tennessee?(I'm most interested in in ANP specialty) I saw some concerns posted for LPN's, RN's given the current census, financial issues at hospitals.

Any information would be welcome in helping me make a decision if I am offered a spot in the program. Thank you all in advance.
