NP school requiring IPN evaluation to continue in program

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to get help and advice as I feel I have been put in a terrible situation and can't believe this is happening to me. My school said they referred me to IPN for mental health concerns and in order to continue in the program I have to be evaluated and cleared by them.

To make a very long and complicated story short, I couldn't continue at my clinical site after being there a few days as I made some "paranoid" statements about the preceptor/clinical site and was told to leave after having somewhat of a panic attack. There's a lot more to it than that but that's basically why they're saying I have to open a case with IPN.

I did some research and contacted a lawyer, found out IPN is basically shady and even if I'm fine I'll likely end up with a 5 year monitoring contract because they're all about money. I have to decide what to do by Friday and I have just been a mess freaking out. Finishing school is the most important thing to me but I feel like I have been set up and don't know what to do.

IPN is shady. I would stay away from it at all costs even if it means dropping out of school and starting over. I have a five year contract for mental health. It will be a five year contract if you enter the program. Five years of checking in every day. Five years of drug tests. Five years of meetings. Do not enter this program.

They are shady in that I believe they do things to make you stay in the program like sticking you with a contract even though you're evaluation was flawless and it was reported you were stable. Or sticking you with a substance abuse disorder when you show up positive for alcohol because you ate soy sauce.

Do not join this program unless the board of nursing orders you to in order to keep your license. I hope the school did not report you to the board.

Depends on risk vs benefit and here's why I would withdraw from school and not go to an IPN eval.

1. Sure, there is the risk for a 5 year contract if you get evaluated but here is even the greater risk............that risk is....because you are now in IPN and have a 5 year contract, your license becomes encumbered and because of that, the school now removes you/doesn't let you attend anymore Because you are under contract.

See how the above can be 2 double whammies? It's not just the 5 year contract potentially, it's also very likely that you are forced to withdraw/dismissed from the school Because you now have a 5 year contract. That's where your school is being sneaky. They aren't telling you that.....if you go to IPN and IPN decides you need a 5 year contract, the school is now going to remove you from the program because of being in the IPN and under contract.

I would go get help on my own. It does sound like you need help based on what you described. I would withdrawal from school and I would tell the school that you are withdrawing and that you are going to go to IPN. This gives the school the extra assurance to NOT report you to the BON because they assume you are going to IPN and you also withdrew from the school and are off their hands regarding what they see as "risk." But me personally, I would tell the school I'm going to IPN, but I wouldn't get close to IPN or actually go. I'm not yelling you to lie either. I'm telling you what I would do.
