Hello
I am prospective MEPN student and wanting to know the route from MEPN to NP.
Do you know if having a MSN would make student eligible to FNP certification or not?
I am very confused as I am getting mixed answers from different websites some mentioning about needing more schooling to become NP and some says it can be waived depending on the experience.
Any information regarding MSN - FNP route will be helpful.
Thank you.
There are some master's entry programs for non-RN college grads, specifically for becoming a nurse or a clinical nurse leader. If you do one of these programs, you'll be trained as an RN only and would need to get another degree to become an NP. I would expect that most FNP programs would be fine with a grad from one of these programs. Many top schools such as Johns Hopkins have such a program.
Of course if you a referring to a direct-entry nurse practitioner program that's a different matter.

It depends on the particular program. Many direct-entry MSN programs for non-nurses lead to an MSN in leadership or other non-clinical specialty. These programs would not make you eligible to become an FNP.
There are a few programs out there which are direct-entry MSN for non-nurses that do prepare students to become an NP or midwife. These programs tend to be highly competitive, highly expensive, and very intense.
Most FNP online schools will have a post-master’s option. USA’s program is pretty decently priced and respected. Just a bit of advice, if you want to work part-time while in the program, you should find a job first. It’s really hard for new-grad nurses to get a part-time or PRN. You usually have to work full-time first and the MSN won’t mean much as a new grad.

So, a little bit about me! I am about to go into my final semester of a direct-entry MSN program and I am looking ahead, as my goal is to become a FNP. I don't know where I will be until January, as my husband is in the military and will be getting orders then. My daughters and I have been separated from my husband for the last 16+ months, as the direct-entry MSN program required me to be here in-person. So ideally, I would like to complete a post-master's FNP certificate online, so I won't have to split up my family again. Would any of my fellow direct-entry MSN graduates know of an online post master's FNP program that accepts direct-entry MSN graduates (that is also military friendly)? I'm also wanting to possibly do the program part-time as I work and get my bearings as a new RN (I'm 36 and don't want to be in school when I'm 50! haha). Thanks again for all your advice and guidance!
