Hello everyone!
Has anyone in an online NP program used a preceptor from a military base? If so, what is the process like? Are you required to get a security clearance? Does it take a long time for the paperwork to be processed?
I am starting the Maryville University FNP/DNP program fall 2019. I am a military dependent and stationed in a small community so the local AFB would be my first choice.
Thanks!

Hi!
I did majority of my rotations at an army teaching hospital and although it was a very great experience getting an affiliation approved (if Maryville is not affiliated yet) can be really taxing, from talking to the appropriate POC to waiting for the approval which takes anywhere from 6-8 months. Mine took a year to be approved since I had to initiate the affiliation as my school didn't have an existing one. Have your clinical coordinator link with the graduate medical education coordinator of the facility you want to go to, and they would know what and how to do the rest. Yes you need clearance which they will run once the affiliation has been approved by the higher ups. Let me know if you have any other questions. Of course, every base has different processes so finding the right POC would be your first step.
I really appreciate the information Eydyey NP! Its sounds like you found an excellent clinical site.
Thanks for the heads up on the waiting period. My clinicals won’t be taking place for about a year and a half, but it sounds like it would be wise to get the ball rolling ASAP.
What level of security clearance did the army teaching hospital require?

Recently saw a posting for NP at a VA facility where it was indicated that a TS-SCI clearance was required. Why such a high level of clearance, I have no idea. On the surface, does not make sense. Level of clearance should be listed in the position announcement, otherwise, a valid question to ask of the HR department when applying.
