NP Preceptors in Athens / Atlanta Ga

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

I am an NP student living in Athens, Ga. My school is having difficulties finding clinical sites for students. The new medical school partnership at UGA has apparently monopolized the rotation sites, making it difficult for NP students to find placement. I thought I would try posting here to see if there are any NPs in the Athens or Atlanta area who would be interested in precepting a student. Message me and I can discuss more details if you or someone you know is interested. Thanks!!

Catfishjon,

UGA is a great school and go Dawgs! I wish you well with this. Didn't know until now that they had a medical school or nursing school.

There's just one thing I don't understand and I will put it out there once again. How is it that a school as prestigious as UGA does not have the bases covered in providing you definitive access to the several preceptors you will need? Not promises to help but in contractual form.

Is this the best kept secret in NP education? Is it just wishful thinking on the student's part that the school will take care of this important aspect of offering a complete education? I'm not sure. The hit and miss aspect of this tells me that obtaining preceptors at many schools, some very good and some very bad, is all too often a matter of luck; and it should never be so.

The predicament you're in is not that much different from the school requiring you to take advanced pharmacology and then saying we don't offer it here you'll have to take it at Georgia Tech if they have a section open.

So there may be your tenuous solution. Driving as you mentioned the two hours to Atlanta to find someone who will teach you for free or do it if you pay them out of pocket. I know you know that the competition for preceptors in Atlanta is also very saturated. As a result many NP students have had to curtail their education either temporarily or indefinitely. This is wrong.

The really sad aspect of this deception is that it boarders on fraud and the nursing professors that teach at these schools know this but very often compartmentalize the sleight of hand by blame shifting the problem to the nursing administrators and so on.

So the next time I hear someone preaching that someone else lacks critical thinking or is not willing to own up to their responsibilities or shortcomings, I will once again ask them to practice what they preach and forgo the deceived NP student's tuition money that underwrites their paycheck.

Good luck with your search but it should never be a matter of luck at all to ask for a complete, well thought out professional education.

This site has a list of NP organizations that has preceptors listed http://www.theagapecenter.com/…/Spec…/Nurse-Practitioner.htm. The link is broken so you will have to copy and paste the organization name into the search engine. You can also check out https://npfinder.aanp.org to locate a preceptor. I hope that this helps.
